Sept 11th in Pop History
On this day, September 11th, in:
• 1993 - Mariah Carey reached # 1 for the seventh time in just nine releases with Dreamlover, knocking out UB40, which had been there for seven weeks with their remake of the Elvis Presley classic Can't Help Falling In Love.
Carey rose to fame in 1990. She was the first artist to have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, from Vision of Love to Emotions. At the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards, Carey won the award for Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her single Vision of Love.
With sales of over 200 million records worldwide, she is now one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Nineteen of Carey's songs have topped the Billboard Hot 100, and she holds the record for the most number-one singles by a solo artist, a female songwriter, and a female producer. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the highest certified female artist in the United States, with 68.5 million album units, tying with Barbra Streisand.
Mariah is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is known for her five-octave vocal range, and signature use of the so-called whistle register. The whistle register is the highest register of the human voice, lying above the falsetto register. It has a specific physiological production that produces a vocal quality similar to that of whistle. She is referred to as the “Songbird Supreme” and the "Queen of Christmas.” Her album Merry Christmas has sold over 15 million copies, and is the best-selling Christmas album of all time.
Regarding Dreamlover (one word, not two), she’s looking for a dream lover to rescue her with a love that lasts always. Bobby Darin also had a song in 1959, Dream Lover (2 words) with a similar theme. Darin's song went to # 2; Carey's topped it, going to # 1.
In the US, Dreamlover was the biggest hit of 1993, according to Billboard.
