Pretty World • Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.
Sergio who?! Okay I know no one has heard of these guys, but they had some great records back in the day. Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a sound all their own. One of the unique sounds that wove it’s way through the decade of the 1960s was the wonderful bossa nova beat, light jazz pop, or as one writer called it, vaguely psychedelic pop, that hailed from the country of Brazil. And no one did it better than these guys.
This particular song, “Pretty World” grabs hold of you and won’t let go. They also added their touch and delightful vocal harmonies to covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," and even to Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love.” I know you’ll love them. I’ve included it below in one of my favorite personal playlists (and I have many!), that I created on Spotify. It’s the lighter side of 1960s sound, guaranteed to make you feel good. Please do give it a listen.
Below, a few Videos and a Spotify Playlist:
A great live performance of Pretty World:
And now a live television performance of The Beatles’ “Fool on the Hill.” This record received a lot of radio airplay:
Here’s a rare video of the group with their hit cover of a very popular 60s song called “Going Out of my Head:”
