Ghostbusters • Ray Parker Jr.
Ghostbusters is a song written by Ray Parker Jr., as the musical theme to the 1984 film of the same name. The movie starred Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Huddon.
Debuting at number 68 on June 16, 1984, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 by August 11, 1984, staying there for three weeks. The song was nominated at the 57th Academy Awards for Best Original Song, but lost to a Stevie Wonder song.
Ghostbusters the first film in the series, was a 1984 sci-fi comedy about three eccentric New York City parapsychologists. After they are fired from Columbia University, they start their own business investigating and capturing ghosts. It had been made on a $30 million budget, and there was great concern whether a comedy film with lots of special effects would ever recoup that much money. But as it turned out, it grossed approximately $295 million in the United States and over $50 million abroad during its theatrical run, making it the most successful film in America that year and one of the most successful comedies of the 1980s. It was the number-one film in theaters for seven consecutive weeks and was one of only four films to gross more than $100 million that year. People loved it!
